Genevera Allen, Associate Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering received the 2020 Curriculum Innovation Award, while Linan Zhou is recognized with the 2020 Outstanding Postdoctoral Research Award from the George R. Brown School of Engineering.

Allen pioneered The Center for Transforming Data to Knowledge (D2K Lab), which provides students with immersive, experiential learning opportunities in data science. The D2K Lab promotes research at Rice and builds partnerships with companies, institutions, and community organizations around Texas and abroad.

This year saw over 30 companies and organizations share their data with D2K lab, with another ten companies sponsoring events during the academic year. Over 150 students garnered real-world experience analyzing the data by enrolling in D2K courses, while another 400 students participated in D2K activities held on campus.

Allen has said of this award and D2K, "I'm honored to be recognized with this award and excited about continuing to develop new educational models for learning data science through working on real-world data challenges."
