Rice faculty members are global leaders in data science and are making contributions to a range of fields, from evaluating election data, to studying population statistics on disease, and to fostering educational innovation. Technical strengths include machine learning, signal processing, networks, high-performance computing, and applied statistics and mathematics.
Strategic Investments in Data Science
Rice has invested $45 million to date through the Data Science Initiative to advance the university’s research reputation and impact through data sciences. Through this initiative, Rice has hired eight new data science faculty and will start new educational programs in data science.
Experiential Education and Open Inquiry
Rice has cemented its reputation as a leader in experiential education through programs like the Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen (OEDK) and the Liu Idea Lab for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. The Rice D2K Lab builds on the success of these programs to offer unsurpassed opportunities for students to solve real-world data science problems through hands-on research and open-ended inquiry. This process not only energizes data science education at Rice but offers an effective recruiting tool for exceptionally talented students and faculty.
