Overview
We live in an era defined by massive amounts and endless varieties of data, all being generated at blistering speeds. While the numbers themselves are impressive and convey a nearly infinite sense of possibility, realizing the promise of big data ultimately depends on people and tools that can transform Data to Knowledge. The first-of-its-kind Rice D2K Lab brings interdisciplinary teams of students and faculty together to make an impact by solving real-world data science challenges.
The Center for Transforming Data to Knowledge (D2K Lab), established at Rice University in 2018, was initially funded with a $4 million gift from Rice alumnus Kevin Harvey and his wife Catherine Harvey. The D2K Lab is dedicated to providing students with immersive, experiential learning opportunities in data science while enhancing data-intensive research at Rice and building partnerships with companies, institutions, and community organizations.

The D2K Lab provides students with engagement, enrichment, and experiential learning opportunities in data science, where they solve real-world data science challenges by working with companies, community organizations and researchers.
World Class Faculty
Rice faculty members are global leaders in data science and are making contributions to a range of fields, from evaluating energy use data, to studying population statistics on disease, and to fostering educational innovation. Technical strengths include machine learning, signal processing, networks, high-performance computing, and applied statistics and mathematics.
Experiential Education and Open Inquiry
Rice has cemented its reputation as a leader in experiential education through programs like the Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen (OEDK) and the Liu Idea Lab for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. The Rice D2K Lab builds on the success of these programs to offer unsurpassed opportunities for students to solve real-world data science problems through hands-on research and open-ended inquiry. This process not only energizes data science education at Rice but offers an effective recruiting tool for exceptionally talented students and faculty.
