Su Chen

Dr. Su Chen joined the D2K Lab in July 2020 as an Assistant Teaching Professor. Dr. Chen is a certified actuary and has experience working in insurance and actuarial consulting firms. She received her Ph.D in the department of Statistics and Data Science at the University of Texas at Austin. Her doctoral research lies in the intersection of methodology, theory and computation of Bayesian statistics and their applications to high dimensional data analysis. Dr. Chen has extensive experience developing and teaching undergraduate courses in math, statistics and data science at UT-Austin and Texas A&M University. Since joining Rice, Dr. Chen has developed two innovative courses that highlight experiential learning in Data Science. Through continuing improvement in curriculum design and pedagogical innovation, she had made an impactful contribution to Data Science education at Rice. Dr. Chen has been serving as the Director of the Data Science Minor. She is passionate about helping students succeed.  

RESEARCH AREAS

Her doctoral research lies in the interaction of methodology, theory and computation of Bayesian statistics and their applications to high dimensional data analysis.
